East Berlin, November 1984. Stasi Captain Wiesler is assigned to spy on the successful writer Georg Dreymann and his partner, the well-known theatre actress Christa-Maria Sieland. But what was planned as a coldly calculated, career-boosting informant assignment increasingly plunges Wiesler into a serious moral conflict: Through his involvement with the lives of these ‘other’ people, with art and literature, he discovers values such as freedom of speech and thought, which had previously been alien to him. But despite his sudden self-doubt, the mechanisms of the system are unstoppable: Wiesler’s existence is destroyed, as is the relationship between Dreymann and Sieland. When the Wall falls in 1989, a new life begins.
