TANZ takes the romantic ballet of the early 19th century as its starting point – though it has little to do with Swan Lake : Florentina Holzinger’s ballet class throws itself, with stubborn discipline, into spectacular and brutal stunts, finding ecstasy in a magical world of nature, horror and nudity.

A dizzying spectacle about physical discipline and the cult of beauty in the dance tradition, performed by an all-female cast aged between thirty and seventy.

Under the direction of Claire Philippart, a ballet class learns to master body and mind through shared rituals and ultimately acquires supernatural powers. Drawing on elements of freak shows, splatter, acrobatics and horror, Holzinger and the outstanding cast create parodies of sensationalist imagery that, in the quest for perfection, transform the crude into the sublime.
