THE UNIVERSAL THEORY (DIE THEORIE VON ALLEM)
Germany, Austria, Switzerland, 2023, in
German, French, Swiss German w/ English subtitles, Drama, 118 minutes
Director: Timm Kröger

In 1974, author Johannes Leinert (Jan Bülow) appears on a German talk show to promote his sci-fi novel “Die Theorie von Allem,” where shadowy Cold War intrigue melds with alternate realities of the multiverse. But instead, Leinert claims his book is fact, not fiction, based on his unpublished doctoral thesis and his own experiences. Cut to 1962, and Leinert’s fantastical tale plays in flashback, beginning with a train journey to Switzerland to attend a physics conference with his stern mentor, Dr. Strathen (Hanns Zischler). En route to the mountain resort they are joined by Prof. Blumberg (Gottfried Breitfuss), an eminent physicist who Strathen seems to bear a grudge against. The conference soon proves to be a dud, but strange goings-on in the hotel intrigue Leinert: a beautiful and mysterious young woman who inexplicably knows things about his past; a bellboy who tells him about secret tunnels and strange doings in the town; and soon, several grisly murders on the ski slopes and the mountain roads. Timm Kröger’s visionary, noirish retro-futurist fable recalls classic suspense films by Alfred Hitchcock and Carol Reed, crossed with the reality-rupturing thrillers of David Lynch and Christopher Nolan. Roland Stuprich’s widescreen black and white cinematography captures the fearsome beauty and sublime otherworldliness of the Swiss Alps; its dreamscape imagery lingers long after viewing this marvelous, mind-bending movie. –Todd Hitchcock

THE TEACHER'S LOUNGE (DAS LEHRERZIMMER) + Live Q&A
Germany, 2023, in german with English subtitles, Drama, 94 minutes
Director: İlker Çatak

Idealistic young teacher Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) relishes her work, teaching both math and physical education to her class of seventh graders. Unfortunately, disciplinary issues are also part of the job, and a recent spate of thefts has both teachers and students on edge. Uncomfortable with the tactics used by her fellow teachers to pressure some students into accusing another of being the thief – not least because it is unclear that the accused is truly guilty – Ms. Nowak continues to seek out the true culprit on her own. A simple trap of unattended money and a web camera appears to catch the real thief, but it’s a fellow staff member in the teachers’ lounge. When Ms. Nowak attempts to take matters into her own hands and settle the matter quietly, she instead unleashes calamitous, unexpected results with far-reaching consequences. İlker Çatak’s sly allegory and Germany’s official selection for the 2024 Oscars® masterfully evokes the slightly strange world of a school – seemingly a world unto itself, yet entirely an extension of the society that made it – and deftly deploys the occasional surreal touch to reflect the anxiety and absurdity experienced by its characters. –Todd Hitchcock

ANSELM
Germany, 2023, in german with English subtitles, Documentary, 93 minutes
Director: Wim Wenders

Artist and iconoclast Anselm Kiefer probes the past, holding up a mirror to post-war Germany through his photography, sculpture and massive architectural installations. Working again in 3D after his acclaimed documentary PINA, director Wim Wenders brings depth to this stereoscopic portrait, creating a collage of the artist’s past and present to fashion an immersive exploration of his spirit. With unfettered access to Kiefer’s estate, La Ribaute in the south of France, Wenders’ roving camera explores the artist’s cavernous archives, his expansive grounds littered with headless dresses and teetering towers, and his studio, where flamethrowers singe canvases and molten metals are poured. A mesmerizing look at Kiefer’s creative and intellectual processes, shot in ultra-high definition 6K by Franz Lustig (who also collaborated with Wenders on this year’s PERFECT DAYS), ANSELM is a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. –Josh Gardner

WINGS OF DESIRE (DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN)
Germany, 1987, in German, English, French, Turkish, Hebrew, Spanish, Japanese with English subtitles, Drama, 128 minutes
Director: Wim Wenders

After an eternity of looking after mortal beings, observing their lives, their loves, their passions and pains, intrigued angel Damiel (Bruno Ganz) decides to join them, crossing over to live life as they do. He discovers love with circus acrobat Marion (Solveig Dommartin), and in the person of “Der Filmstar” (Peter Falk), something like an old friend. Wim Wenders’ elegant, moody and profoundly moving film was “dedicated to all the former angels, but especially to Yasujiro, François and Andrej,” Wenders’ homage to filmmakers Yasujirō Ozu, François Truffaut and Andrei Tarkovsky.
