Join us, radio host, music programmer, producer, and writer, Lorraine Petel (NTS Radio, CREEM), filmmaker, photographer and musician Dave Markey (We Got Power, SIN 34), and Kaput Magazin’s Thomas Venker on Wednesday, September 30th at the Goethe-Institut for a transatlantic spin on a multimedia listening session focusing on punk as a culture of self-documentation — an investigation into what happens when a once primarily local underground becomes cultural history.

What happens when a subculture begins to see itself through photographs, zines, films, radio and independent journalism? Can documentation preserve the immediacy of a scene, or does every act of archiving also contribute to turning it into mythology?

Tracing the changing relationship between punk and its media through the personal histories of the three participants, the conversation will look at how records, touring bands, zines, radio and images once connected scenes across geographical and generational boundaries, and at what has changed in an age in which almost everything can be documented, distributed and archived instantly. What can the history of Southern California punk tell us about DIY media, cultural memory and the possibility of an underground today?

The evening includes  a selection of clips highlighting each participant’s body of work, as well as a playlist featuring songs that had a lasting influence on them.

Presented within the context of TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD'S PUNK MUSEUM as part of Alle gegen Alles. Punk@50, a project of the Goethe-Institutes in the United States and Mexico that marks the 50th anniversary of punk through exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and discussions that focus on punk as a subculture, protest movement, and catalyst for self-determination.

ABOUT TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD'S PUNK MUSEUM 
Drawn from the extensive archive of artist, curator, and long-time punk historian Tequila Mockingbird, this immersive exhibition showcases an extraordinary collection of punk art, memorabilia, photographs, flyers, zines, posters, records, and rare ephemera that trace the evolution of one of the city’s most influential cultural movements, even drawing connections to the punk scenes in Europe and Germany. Accompanied by a series of events including film screenings, discussions, and more, Tequila Mockingbird’s Punk Museum serves as a space for artists, musicians, fans, and community to gather and celebrate the creativity, DIY ethos, and enduring legacy of the LA punk scene—from its underground beginnings to its continued impact on art, music, fashion, and activism today.

Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Jubiläums von Punk versammelt das Projekt Ausstellungen, Konzerte, Film- und Gesprächsformate zu einem vielstimmigen Dialog über Subkultur, Protest und Selbstbestimmung.
 

  • Lorraine Petel has been imbedded in the fabric of the international punk and hardcore community for the last decade and a half, all the while pushing the traditional boundaries of the music industry in favor of a more advantageous climate for artists and creatives alike.  As a radio host, music programmer, producer, and writer, Petel has skillfully mastered how to interview and engage with artists, allowing their freedom and authenticity to shine through as well as proficiently knowing how to weave decades of different genres together as a programmer, resulting in musical discovery and a captivating conversation between the songs. 

    Hosting and programming her own radio show on NTS for the last 10 years, Petel’s show, “Yesterday’s News” has allowed her to co-host and co-program the show with The Misfits, Kat Von D, AFI, Basement, Terror, Angel Du$t, Viagra Boys, Bad Nerves, Ceremony, OFF!, Citizen, Ecca Vandal, FIDLAR, and many more. 

    From also hosting and programming her own show on Sonos Radio, modeled after the work of John Peel, to writing for CREEM magazine, highlighting the voices and personalities behind the music, and from teaming up and collaborating directly with Iggy Pop on his BBC 6 show, making sure underground punk, hardcore, and indie bands are given a chance to be heard by a larger audience and in turn allowed to be a part of the cultural conversation at large, Petel has made a conscious effort to continue to prove that rock bands are still gritty and adventurous, and still have a major stake in how media, ideologies, and more importantly, how lives are transformed. 
     

  • David Markey has sustained a truly independent career in the shadow of Hollywood and against the backdrop of corporate America for well over four decades. As a filmmaker, photographer and musician, Markey brings together underground music, experimental cinema and contemporary culture in a direct and insightful way. His body of work is also historically significant, representing a unique record of the punk scene in Southern California throughout the 1980's and 1990's. His feature films include Sonic Youth / Nirvana tour documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke (1992) which also features The Ramones, Dinosaur Jr., Babes In Toyland, & Gumball. the Los Angeles punk scene Super-8 cult classics; The Slog Movie (1982), Desperate Teenage Lovedolls (1984), and it's sequel Lovedolls Superstar (1986);  Shonen Knife: Blast Off! (1997), the international film festival favorite The Reinactors (2008), Dinosaur Jr.'s Bug Live at the 9:30 (2012), the feature length documentary on legendary Los Angeles punk band Circle Jerks with My Career As A Jerk (2012), and the critically acclaimed documentary The Secret Lives Of Bill Bartell (2025). 
    Markey has also directed music videos for Redd Kross, Sonic Youth, Bob Mould, Meat Puppets, The Flesh Eaters. The Muffs, The Black Lips, Black Flag, Pat Smear, & Mudhoney amongst others. David is also a published author with the books We Got Power! Hardcore Punk Scenes From 1980's Southern California (Bazillion Points 2012) and Scenes From Inside (Commentarivm 2023).  His indefatigable DIY aesthetic continues to drive him, as well as inspire a new generation of filmmakers, musicians and artists.

  • Thomas Venker, lebt und arbeitet in Köln. 

    Er ist Mitherausgeber und Co-Chefredakteur des Kaput-Magazin für Insolvenz & Pop und Co-Kurator der Konzertserien "Köln ist kaput“ & „Talking Kaput“. Kaput wurde in den vergangenen Jahren mit dem Rocco Clein Preis als Bestes Musikmagazin (2015), mit dem Preis des Verbands Unabhängiger Tonträgerhersteller VUT als „bestes Experiment“ (2016) sowie in 2018, 2019 und 2020 gleich dreimal für Beiträge der Autor*innen mit einem Anchor, dem Musikjournalismuspreis des Hamburger Reeperbahnfestivals ausgezeichnet.

    Bevor er 2014 Kaput gründete, war er 14 Jahre lang Chefredakteur des Intro Magazins, Deutschlands zu jener Zeit Auflagenstärksten Magazin (mit 150.000 gedruckten Magazinen) – 2008 bekam Intro den Grimme Online Award für seinen (damals) wegweisenden Netzauftritt. 

    Er schreibt regelmäßig für ein Portfolio von Zeitschriften und Tageszeitungen, moderiert Panels und Symposien für kulturelle Einrichtungen, unterhält das Kunst-Schallplatten-Label Edition Fieber und gehört zum kuratorischen Team der Monheim Triennale.

    Neben seiner journalistischen Arbeit lehrt er Musikjournalismus und Künstlermarketing an mehreren deutschen Universitäten, unter anderem am Institut für Pop-Musik der Folkwang Universität der Künste, der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, der Universität Paderborn und der Universität Köln. 

    Er berät regelmäßig Musiker*innen in Karrierefragen – zu seinen Klient*innen gehörten u.a. Sid LeRock, Phillip Sollmann (Efdemin), das audiovisuelle Kunstperformance-Projekt Phantom Kino Ballett (Sarah Szczesny & Lena Willikens) und das Performance-Projekt LABOUR. 

    Zuletzt ist von ihm das Buch Talking to Americans im Ventil Verlag, Mainz erschienen.
