REINAS DE LOS ÁNGELES
USA (2014), 70 min., English/Spanish w/ English subtitles, Digital Projection.
Director and Producer: Byron Jose, Director of Photography: Gelare Khoshgozaran, Editor: Byron Jose, Featuring: Topacio Escobar, Angie Galan, Billy Lopez, Roxy Gutierrez, Hugo Lewinsky, Loretta Lorraine, Maritza Alvarez.

Reinas de Los Ángeles documents the oral hystories of trans women and drag queen performers who bring to life the stages of Latine gay bars in Los Angeles. “Reinas” brings to the forefront the shared lived experiences of these performers and a historical look into the bars where their work is celebrated every night. It provides a platform for personal narratives focused on the creation of labor in an informal economy, and the formation of gender identity, sexual orientation, and its expressions. Through this film the director facilitates a conversation among these performers, and the creation of community within im/migrant and displaced peoples through drag performances. The film documents a cross-generational dialogue rooted in the experiences of gender, language, and im/igration of the queens of Los Angeles from the ‘80s to the present day.

Performers featured in the film will perform following the screening.
