Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck) is a kind-hearted 12-year-old who enjoys exploring the beautiful North Sea island of Amrum where he lives with his high-strung mother Hille (Laura Tonke) and pragmatic Aunt Ena (Lisa Hagmeister). After Hille gives birth to a baby brother, she refuses to eat any food but white bread, butter and honey. But it’s 1945, and these foods are in short supply due to wartime rationing. Nanning resolves to find these prized goods for his beloved mother and undertakes a quest across the picturesque island — even crossing the mudflats to the mainland during low tide. All the while, Nanning discovers more about his family, his community and his country, which is on the verge of defeat in World War II, despite what he has been told, or what’s reported in the news or what his mother fervently believes. Sensitively directed by acclaimed filmmaker Fatih Akin from an autobiographical screenplay by German actor/director Hark Bohm, AMRUM delicately depicts the dawning of conscience, when those too young to know better begin to awaken to the ills and evils of the world and their own role in it. –Todd Hitchcock

Winner of the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, German director Mascha Schilinski’s (DARK BLUE GIRL) stunning sophomore feature is a hypnotic, time-traversing portrait of four generations of women living in the same isolated German farmhouse over the course of a century. Starting in the early 1900s, spanning the Second World War, the German Democratic Republic during the 1980s and present-day Germany, Schilinski’s puzzle box narrative follows Alma (Hanna Heckt), Erika (Lea Drinda), Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) as they endure private and political traumas that echo eerily across time. Unfolding like a labyrinthine ghost story, Schilinski’s film gradually reveals itself as an unexpected epic about the ways in which women’s lives are shaped by seen and unseen socio-political forces, and in which inherited trauma forges a kinship across generations. With a restrained visual language that leans on Fabian Gamper’s 4:3 cinematography to create an immersive, painterly world, in which the camera glides through interior domestic spaces like the disembodied ghost of an earlier era, and an unsettling score by Michael Fiedler and Eike Hosenfeld that amplifies the unearthly atmosphere of dread and longing — the film reflects place as a palimpsest for family history, connecting cultural memory with shared emotion. In their fourth collaboration to date, director Christian Petzold and actress Paula Beer forge an enigmatic depiction of haunting loss and mysterious connection. After surviving a car crash that kills her boyfriend, Laura (Beer), a music student at university, is taken in by Betty (Barbara Auer), an older woman who witnessed the accident. Betty cares for the unharmed but shaken Laura with a motherly devotion, and soon, Betty, her husband and their adult son are treating Laura like one of the family. Petzold imbues this close-quarters drama with atmospheric tension, agitating even the warmest domestic scenes with the disquiet of unspoken history. At its center, Beer beguiles with unnerving presence, condensing her performance into precise gestures and a steady gaze. An ethereal, intoxicating comedy, Julian Radlmaier’s fifth feature is as light as a summer breeze, but its simple pleasures hide profound truths about the ghosts of the past and the mysteries of the present. In the sleepy East German village of Sangerhausen, Ursula (Clara Schwinning) toils away at a café, selling tourists their famous rose cake. But she can’t help but yearn for something more: a connection, a spark, a sweet summer cherry. When she meets a group of sophisticated musicians from Berlin, it seems like she might have finally found that je ne sais quoi she’s been searching for. Neda (Maral Keshavarz) is an Iranian YouTuber trying to gain fame with off the beaten path travel tips. She meets Korean tour guide Song-nam (Kyung-Taek Lie), who promises to show her around, but she can’t help but sense the specters of those she left behind in Iran. As their paths converge — place, memory and history collide, linking these lost souls in a surreal ghost hunt. With warm, sumptuous visuals shot on Super 16mm by cinematographer Faraz Fesharaki (WHAT DO WE SEE WHEN WE LOOK AT THE SKY?, AFI FEST 2021), Radlmaier offers a resolute but gentle rejection of Germany’s right-leaning political climate, finding resonant affinities between outsiders, immigrants and laborers. –Josh Gardner

In a sun-dappled apartment in New York’s West Village, legendary queer photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) spends a quiet afternoon with longtime friend and non-fiction writer Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall). Ripping cigarettes, Hujar recounts the events of the day prior, no detail too small to share, no name too big to drop: a fraught photo session with Allen Ginsberg, the minutia of a Chinese carryout order, a phone call about an overdue invoice. Tiny moments are revealed to hold profound meaning. Recorded in December 1974 as part of an abandoned book project, the re-discovered transcript serves as the basis for Ira Sach’s luminous ode to a New York that no longer exists. Incredibly intimate and beautifully shot in grainy 16mm by Alex Ashe, Whishaw reunites with his PASSAGES director to turn in another hypnotic performance, his mid-century cadence and gravelly voice utterly transformative. Though set in the confines of a single location, Sachs (a longtime chronicler of queer New York) finds magic in a simple rooftop smoke break or a spellbinding dance to Tennessee Jim’s rollicking “Hold Me Tight.” Premiering to acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, PETER HUJAR’S DAY is at once a tender portrait of an artist and a breathless time machine to an uninhibited pre-AIDS New York. –Josh Gardner

For over a century, a ginkgo tree, standing sentinel in the garden of Philipps University of Marburg in Germany, experiences its surroundings — but how and what it experiences is a mystery. Every day, students, professors and staff pass by the tree, graze its bark, recline beneath its shade. Ildikó Enyedi’s profound scientific epic — her best work since 2017’s enchanting ON BODY AND SOUL, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival — locates three such passersby, separated by generations. In 2020, a professor of neuroscience, stranded and isolated on the COVID-abandoned campus, begins to conduct experiments on the tree’s sensorial faculties. In 1972, a first-year student, inspired by a romantic dalliance, cares for a sensitive geranium; and, in 1908, the university’s first female student discovers a new way of seeing plants through photography. Enyedi excavates these stories from the ginkgo tree’s roots, like living fossils that have inseminated themselves into its being. The cast is led by Tony Leung Chiu-wai (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, CHUNGKING EXPRESS) and Léa Seydoux (THE BEAST, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR), as two preternaturally sensitive and curious modern researchers who wish to understand the mind of plants.
