Ulises, a Philadelphia-based bookshop and project space dedicated to artists’ books and independent publishing, will host a conversation around present conditions of independent publishing and cultural production through the lens of scale—from a single artist and the collective, to institutions and networks. The panel will include Yusuf Hassan (BlackMass/NY), Manuel Raeder (Studio Manuel Raeder & BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE/Berlin & Mexico City), Rachel Valinsky (Wendy’s Subway/NYC), Siddhartha Lokanandi (Hopscotch Reading Room/Berlin), and Laura Coombs (Cyberfeminism Index and A Sexual History of the Internet/NYC).

Inspired by the iconic, unruly Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau book S, M, L, XL, Ulises’s panel interrogates the ways in which scale affects and bleeds across categories in contemporary publishing, often informing the core identities of those involved.

SMLXL will take place at MoMA PS1 as part of The Classroom programming at this year’s New York Art Book Fair on September 26, 2026.

Ulises will also host the official New York Art Book Fair after party at Index Space, Greenpoint, on September 26, from 8pm-midnight. Open to the public.

Funded in partnership with the Goethe-Institut New York.

Speaker

  • Ulises is a Philadelphia-based bookshop and project space dedicated to artists’ books and independent art publications that explores the relationship between publics and publications. We provide an inventory of titles not widely distributed in the United States on contemporary art, graphic design, art theory, architecture, criticism, curatorial practice, and adjacent fields. We support people who make books and expand the boundaries of what art publishing can be.

Hosting projects, exhibitions, and residencies, Ulises’s open-ended programming explores publishing as an incubator for new forms of artistic, editorial, curatorial, and pedagogical practice. Ulises sees the democratic potential of publishing as a vehicle for activism, education, assembly, and exchange.

  • Yusuf Hassan is the founder of BlackMass Publishing. Hassan’s work explores the idea of the book his reductive technique and meditative approach challenge the physical and poetic boundaries of his materials canceling the idea of restrictions within his work allows him to analyze it with no limitations. using printed matter as a physical way of expression Much of Hassan’s success is attributed to his unique ability to express dramatic and emotional content through publications and printmaking. Hassan holds publications in the permanent collection of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Langston Hughes Library, Thomas J. Watson Library, The Houghton Library, and The Whitney Museum Library.

  • Studio Manuel Raeder is a multidisciplinary artistic praxis and design studio based in Berlin and Mexico City, known for its approach to graphic design, editorial projects, research, exhibition design, textile design, and visual communication.

The studio is concerned with the construction of narratives — in the form of books, exhibition design, and communication design. Books can function as carriers of information or as experimental devices to document and conceive narratives. In a similar manner, exhibition design can trigger different sensorial experiences, guiding visitors through a spatial narrative. The studio is interested in the meaning of books and storytelling within space, the archive, and the future of libraries, as well as their role in the context of display, architecture, and product design.

In 2011, Manuel Raeder founded the publishing house BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE to distribute and publish artists with a strong interest in exploring the format of the artist’s book.

Recent permanent display and exhibition architecture projects include: Nicola L.: I Am The Last Woman Object, Museion, Bolzano; Rose Lowder: Bouquets, Kunsthalle Zürich; CARA (Center for Art, Research and Alliances), New York; and Kurimanzutto, libros, Mexico City.
