KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online club to discuss films from Germany.
How it works: Each month, we choose a German film currently available to stream on U.S. platforms, watch it independently, and come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German cinema.
In our October session, we’ll discuss Amrum, Fatih Akın’s 2025 historical drama based on the childhood memories of his mentor Hark Bohm. German Film Award-nominated cinematographer Karl Walter Lindenlaub will join us for the discussion.
Amrum tells the story of Nanning, the twelve-year-old son of an SS lieutenant colonel living on the titular island in the waning days of World War II. Despite the dangers of the nearby sea—and even greater dangers across it—Nanning helps his mother feed the family by working on the farm of his Nazi-hating neighbor. This hard and anxious life is interrupted by Germany’s surrender, which sets free political tensions long simmering beneath the family’s patriotic surface.
“This layered, resonant film presents as a deceptively simple coming-of-age story in the manner of Truffaut’s The 400 Blows,” notes KINO! Film Salon host Jim Kolmar, “yet its carefully established themes bloom with Akın’s characteristic cinematic elegance and understanding of human emotion. It’s an understated gem.”
Amrum world premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was an official selection of AFI Fest, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the Seattle International Film Festival, among others. It was nominated for six German Film Awards, including Best Fiction Film and Best Cinematography (Karl Walter Lindenlaub). Hosted by Jim Kolmar
Jim programs for SXSW and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival and was a founding committee member of Festival Internacional de Cine Tulum (FICTU). He has participated in numerous international festival juries, panels, and committees.
KINO! Film Salon is a production of Telescope Film, in partnership with the German Film Office.
