Talk|East German Punk on Record, Tape, and Celluloid | ft. Seth Howes

In East Germany, as elsewhere, punk was practiced betwixt and between other forms of DIY culture: the exhibition of installation and performance art, the self-publishing of chapbooks and little magazines, and the circulation of music and sound recordings. This talk examines artifacts of East German punk—super-8 films, cassette tapes, and so-tamizdat LPs recorded in the East and released illegally in the West—to reconstruct the working conditions that shaped East German punk culture. Film clips, musical selections, and visual materials will be discussed in context, followed by a Q&A.
This event is framed in the context of the ZickZack exhibition at Various/Artists (Oct. 8 - Nov. 7), and is a part of Goethe-Institut New York's contribution to the region-wide project, Alle gegen Alles. Punk@50. Emerging in the mid-1970s as a radical subculture defined by opposition, negation, and disruption, punk challenged conventions in music, politics, and everyday life. Half a century later, Alle gegen Alles asks: What roles do subcultures play in today’s volatile societies? What defines punk in the present moment? Across participating cities, locally curated programs form the backbone of a larger international dialogue on subculture, protest, and self-determination.

Seth Howes is associate professor of German at the University of Missouri. He is the author of Moving Images on the Margins: Experimental Film in Late Socialist East Germany (Camden House, 2019) the and co-editor, with Mirko Hall and Cyrus Shahan, of Beyond No Future: Cultures of German Punk (Bloomsbury, 2016).
