Join us for a film screening of YUMI, a documentary film that follows a movement of young Pacific advocates seeking to bring climate change before the International Court of Justice. Beginning at the University of the South Pacific, their campaign moves from a university setting to the international stage, with the aim of protecting vulnerable island nations and establishing clearer legal obligations for states to address climate change.
As the campaign progresses, the young advocates engage with ministers, ambassadors and other international representatives, navigating the complexities of diplomacy and the challenges of building consensus. At the heart of their efforts is a proposed resolution at the United Nations that could pave the way for the International Court of Justice to clarify states’ responsibilities under international law in addressing climate change.
Through a close look at the people and negotiations behind this initiative, YUMI explores the role of international institutions in responding to the climate crisis and the efforts of Pacific communities to make their voices heard on the global stage.
The film has received numerous awards, including the Audience Award Documentary Filmat the Max Ophüls Preis Film Festival in 2025.
