Literature Residency Tartu
The Goethe-Institut Tallinn, the German Cultural Institute Tartu and the Prima Vista Literature Festival will host a residency in the UNESCO City of Literature Tartu for authors and illustrators from the UNESCO Cities of Literature Heidelberg and Bremen from April 25 to June 6, 2025. This program offers accommodation in Tartu for 6 weeks, as well as travel and a stipend. The aim of the residency is to encourage literary research and cultural exchange between Heidelberg, Bremen and Tartu.
Conditions of Funding
German-speaking authors and illustrators with at least one published book can apply. The applicants' place of residence and work should be within the vicinity of one of the two UNESCO Cities of Literature, Heidelberg or Bremen. Unfortunately, applications from Estonian citizens cannot be accepted.
The scholarship includes free use of a one-room apartment in the German Cultural Institute Tartu and an allowance of 1,200 euros. In addition, there is a one-time reimbursement of costs for the journey to and from Tartu (slow travel by train and bus is possible).
The scholarship holders are responsible for their own insurance (health insurance, accident and liability insurance, et cetera).
The resident writer or illustrator is provided time and space to develop an independent project. It will be possible to conduct research or writing pertinent to their own interests. During the residency, the writer or illustrator is also invited to organize or participate in at least one public event, for example, a talk, presentation, or workshop.

A jury of the participating program partners (Goethe-Institut Tallinn, German Cultural Institute Tartu, Prima Vista Literature Festival, UNESCO Cities of Literature Heidelberg, Bremen and Tartu) decides on the award based on the quality and relevance of the residency project submitted for the stay in Tartu. It is expected that the letter of motivation refers to Tartu and Estonia. There is no right of appeal.
