Conditions of Funding

German-based performing artists in dance and theatre who are planning international projects. The funding is aimed exclusively at individual artists or individual representatives of an ensemble/collective. In exceptional cases, two persons per project can be considered with regard to travel expenses.

We cover travel expenses and/or provide a weekly allowance of €500 for artistic research abroad. Funding is available for a maximum stay of two weeks.
Study visits, trips of a touristic nature, guest performance trips, attendance at festivals, advanced training courses, commercial training seminars, as well as the implementation of courses, advanced training courses, etc. are excluded from funding. Persons who are invited by a residence/organizer are generally excluded from the research stay funding.

Consideration of sustainability criteria in the choice of means of transport: For travel times of up to seven hours and/or 600 km we prefer to support rail travel. We assess the eligibility of additional costs compared to air fares. At the time of application, no firm bookings (flights, hotels) may have been made for the requested parts of the trip.
Travel to German-speaking countries is excluded from funding.

  • Detailed description of your artistic research project, including research plan, objectives and time frame
  • Information about the applicant
  • Applicant’s complete contact details
  • In case of commitment: Account details (incl. IBAN and Swift code) and name of contracting party
  • Detailed financing plan (income and expenses, grants etc.) with information about gap funding (mark "funding requested" if appropriate) and public funding options
  • If requesting a travel grant, submit two comparative quotes for travel fares (travel agencies, rail, shipping agencies etc.).
  • Indicate whether the applicant has already received funding from the Goethe-Institut for previous projects.

Please take note of our privacy policy.

Measures that have already begun, i.e. projects in connection with which bookings (e.g. for flights) have already been made, cannot generally be funded. Before making binding bookings, it is therefore necessary to apply for the so-called early start of measures informally by e-mail. The award of the early start of measures is not equivalent to a binding funding commitment.

After a completed research stay, we do not accept any further research applications from the funded person for one calendar year.

Next application deadline

The application must be received at least twelve weeks before your trip is to begin.
