At the Vorbereiten, Begleiten, Ankommen (Prepare. Support. Arrive.) forum at the Pfefferberg Theatre in Berlin, participants in the “Pre-integration and Transition Management” project came together to take stock of their efforts after three years. One thing’s for sure: they plan to include more countries in the project going forward.
 

Good preparation is important to ensure a successful experience for new migrants in Germany. The Goethe-Institut is improving the diverse and long-standing services provided in the origin countries as well as in Germany to make arrival in Germany easier for people from different countries, with the project “Pre-integration and transition management – ensuring a successful migration process”, which has been running since mid-2023.

The Goethe-Institut has always supported people during their migration to Germany. What form does this support take? What works well? What else needs to be done? These were the focuses of an event entitled “Discover. Explore. Arrive. Outcomes of preparatory and early integration projects run by the Goethe-Institut, and immigration potential for qualified professionals”.
 

In 2015, a law came into force that made it easier for people from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia to work in Germany. How has immigration in the region developed during this time? And what distinguishes the pre-integration work here now?

The new study “Annäherung, die im Heimatland beginnt” (Approaches that begin at home) examines the meaning and purpose of pre-integration: migrant workers who receive information about life in Germany before arrival are less susceptible to false expectations.

The corona pandemic characterises people’s day-to-day life all over the world. What that means in specific terms for pre-integration work varies depending on location and region. 

The new project “Pre-integration in the regions of South-East Asia, South-East Europe, North Africa/Middle East and Brazil” started in July 2020.

After running for two years, the project “Pre-Integration in the Regions of South-East Asia and South-East Europe” came to a close in June 2020. It should soon be possible for migrants from all over the world to use the materials generated.

Goethe-Institutes in South-East Asia, South-East Europe, Brazil, North Africa and the Middle East have pooled the expertise of their diverse cooperation partners in order to prepare potential migrants for life in Germany as effectively as possible.

Migrants start to prepare for a life in Germany long before joining an integration course. The Goethe-Institut in the countries of origin has a key role to play in these preparations.

The website “Mein Weg nach Deutschland” (www.goethe.de/mwnd) is primarily aimed at new arrivals from non-member states who want to emigrate to Germany for professional or private reasons, or have already arrived.

The Goethe-Institut is involved in pre-integration language teaching for immigrants. Quality in this sector has improved significantly in recent years.
