Stock we offer

Our public library stocks a representative and up-to-date selection of media in both German and English, keeping you informed about latest trends and current issues in Germany. 

We hold special collections in our main areas of German as a foreign language, contemporary literature, film and art and contemporary history. Amongst which you will find apart from books also feature films and documentaries (with English subtitles), as well as music CDs and audio books.

Newspapers & Magazines on offer


(literally “The Time “or “Times”) is a national weekly newspaper that is highly respected for its quality journalism. The paper is considered to be highbrow. Its political direction is centrist and liberal, but has oscillated a number of times between slightly left-leaning and slightly right-leaning. Die Zeit often publishes dossiers, essays, third-party articles and excerpts of lectures of different authors emphasising their points of view on a single aspect or topic in one or in consecutive issues.

(english "The Mirror") is a German weekly news magazine, published in Hamburg. It is one of Europe's largest publications of its kind, with a weekly circulation of more than one million. Der Spiegel is similar in style and layout to American news magazines such as Time or Newsweek. In terms of the breadth and amount of detail in its articles it is comparable to the Atlantic Monthly. It is known in Germany for its distinctive, academic writing style and its large volume—a standard issue may run 200 pages or more. 

is the largest women's magazine of Germany, with a circulation of around 800,000 and an estimated readership of 3,6 million. Published every two weeks, the magazine was established in 1954 in West Germany, and deals with a variety of themes including fashion, culture, psychology, partnerships, medicine, the environment, careers and politics.

Geo
is part of a family of educational monthly magazines which are published by the Gruner Verlag in Hamburg. Similar to the National Geographic magazine, it focuses on themes as diverse as science, medicine, biology, politics and travel, and is known for its profound reports, which are accompanied by opulent pictures.

Deutsch perfekt is the perfect combination of professional journalism and successful language training. Every month the magazine offers a versatile mix of short articles and longer news stories, interesting interviews and controversial discussions, travel recommendations and practical tips for work, university and everyday conversations. Economics, career, politics, culture, entertainment, sports, tourism and everyday life in Germany – not forgetting Austria and Switzerland. Also included are useful explanations and exercises on German vocabulary and grammar.
 

(english "Your Mirror") is a monthly German magazine aimed at children aged between 8 and 14.  The magazine provides news in an appealing and educative way mirror those in Der Spiegel, but they are offered in an age-appropriate manner and entertaining and educational way. Topics covered include stories of politics, economics, nature and technology, culture, sport and people in Germany and other countries. Jokes, comics and puzzles add the fun factor.
 

(english "Courier") is a monthly German magazine aimed at children from 9 years of age. Child-friendly reports about foreign countries, sports, computers, experiments as well as current topics are covered in each edition.

The library is open to the general public. Reference use of the library is free of charge. To borrow books and other media a valid library card is needed.

Registration for Membership

To obtain a library card please download and print out the registration form below. Fill in the details and return it to us in person along with proof of address (i.e. driving licence, utility bill, etc).  On receipt of the appropriate membership fee (cash only) we will issue your new library card right away.

Loan periods
Books, CDs and magazines: 4 weeks
DVDs and board games: 2 weeks

Renewals
The loan period may be extended twice (except magazines), provided that other library users have not reserved the materials. Renewal of loans can be made anytime via the online catalogue or by contacting the library issue desk during library office hours.
