The story of a Roma woman who never gives up

Me Sem Aida” is a TV documentary about Aida Vehabovic, a third-year student at the Acting Department of the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is one of the few Roma women who decided to dedicate her life to this profession. Persistent, sharp, defiant, intelligent, and communicative, Aida is carving her path through an intolerant Bosnian society and never gives up.

In high school, I was the only Roma girl in the class. My teacher knew that. At the beginning of the school year, in front of the entire class, she said to me: ‘Aida, I have to ask you something, I hope you won’t be offended—are you Roma?’ I just stood up and said: ‘Yes.’ Without any complications. Of course, there are children even today, I personally know them, who are Roma but unfortunately don’t have the courage to stand up and say ‘yes.’ That is one of my goals when I finish my education—to tell children how important it is to have your own identity and to say ‘yes’ when it needs to be said,” Aida emphasizes.

BHRT’s series “Life of Minorities”, through documentary stories, presents the position, identity, and challenges faced by members of national minorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, promoting understanding, tolerance, and social inclusion.
