This year’s Kino German Film Festival opens with “The Royal Game”, a film adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s same titled novel. Shortly after handing in the manuscript of “The Royal Game” in 1942, Stefan Zweig chooses a double suicide with his wife.

Stefan was born in Vienna to a very wealthy Jewish family, he showed his talent in writing at a very early age. During the 1920s and 30s, Zweig was already one of the world’s most prominent novelists. However, soon after the Nazi rose to power, and we know the rest of the story…

“The Last Days of Stefan Zweig”, a graphic novel created by Laurent Seksik and Guillaume Sorel, offers a glimpse at the last flight of Stefan Zweig. In 1941, Zweig left New York with his wife and were heading for Brazil. President Vargas has just announced that he will welcome European Jews who have been forced into exile. But will Zweig find peace and what he desire there?

On 22 February 1942, Stefan Zweig and his wife Lotte committed suicide in Petropolis, putting an end to their wanderings. Their lives during these last few months in Brazil are the subject of this graphic novel, an adaptation of the eponymous novel by Laurent Seksik.
