DANCE PERFORMANCE Sebastian Matthias: volution / groove space

Dancer in volution / groove space © Gerhard F. Ludwig

Jakarta
26.-28.11.2015

Every day we are part of a permanent urban choreography. Diverse and highly sensitive physical capabilities enable us urban dwellers to respond to the different dynamics in our surroundings. groove space is a research and performance series that started as collaborative project in Berlin and has since made stops in Zurich and Freiburg. After Jakarta the project will go further to Düsseldorf, Tokyo and Hamburg. In these cities, choreographer and dance scholar Sebastian Matthias examines the relation between urban space, body, movement and rhythm.

Inspired by the many small spaces of interaction that together form the interrelated chains and networks of Jakarta, the dancers and the audience will be together in several different spaces. Supported by the performance artists Irwan Ahmett and Tita Salina, the audience will be moving continuously through private and urban space while changing into different groups in size and constellation. This shared experience will end in a kitsch garden of artificial plants designed by visual artist Iswanto Hartono. A group of young artists named “Cut and Rescue”, will create a sound installation, acoustic space and music composition consisting of Indonesian songs and Jakarta’s diverse soundscapes.  Costumes for the performers will be specifically created by Indonesian designer Didiet Maulana of the fashion house IKAT Indonesia. We cordially invite you to join us in this spatial and movement experiment and to get into the groove!

Sebastian Matthias studied dance at the Juilliard School in New York and dance studies at the Free University in Berlin (MA). He has danced at the Nuremberg State Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (USA) and Karin Hermes (Switzerland). He concentrates on modular improvisation systems in his choreographic work, developing them in cooperation with the dancers Isaac Spencer, Lisanne Goodhue and Deborah Hofstetter in independent productions and as a resident choreographer at Tanzhaus NRW or institutions such as the Cullberg Ballet. His production Tremor was awarded the Sophiensaele Jury Prize at Berlin’s 100° Festival 2011 and was invited to theºTANZPLATTFORM DEUTSCHLAND 2012. His work Danserye was also invited to theºTANZPLATTFORM DEUTSCHLAND 2014. Since March 2012 he has been deepening his approach to artistic research with a doctorate grant at the ‘Assemblies and Participation’ postgraduate college of the HafenCity University Hamburg and is expanding it to include participative processes.

volution / groove space is specifically produced for the German Season in Indonesia and will be performed only in Jakarta as its reference city.
