Arthouse Cinema Talk #5: Archive, Image, and Media focuses on two films from the Arthouse Cinema program:
Before Your Eyes - Vietnam (1981) directed by Harun Farocki and
Marianne & Juliane (1981) directed by Margarethe von Trotta.
In 1990 the Czech writer Milan Kundera explored the term “imagology” in his novel
Immortality and described the power of reality compared to ideology. At the same time, imagology is again stronger than reality itself. Imagology is described as a movement requiring the creation of a system that arranges and shapes a certain perception.
The image is an inseparable part of imagology. In the two films at the center of this session, the question of image is explored and re-discussed through two different cinematic narratives. Farocki deals with questions of image and mediation based on the subject of war; von Trotta, on the other hand, deals with image and the politics of representation based on subjects specific to women. The discussion will also involve a critical look at the current practices of handling images and media.
