The exhibition 'Para Sekutu yang Tidak Bisa Berkata Tidak' (The Acquiescent Allies) started with the works of international artists in the collection of Galeri Nasional Indonesia from two exhibitions: Paris Jakarta 1959–1960 (1992) and Contemporary Art of the Non-Aligned Countries (1995). They pose certain questions that frame the selected works. Do these international artists have a special relationship with artists in (or from) Indonesia or with the artistic practices that take place here? Do these artists know each other? Or are they simply classified because of their age, gender, nationality, style of work, or artistic taste?

The next stage is to explore several works that contain the artists’ practice, thoughts, and attitudes that are intertwined and complement the core intention. At this stage, a keyword and a series of questions derived from the works and practice of several selected artists serve as a guide. Is solidarity (among people, groups, and nations) traceable in what artists do? Can it be manifested in their work? If so, what? If not, why? Can we recognize these various forms of solidarity? Should they be distinguished from each other? Has time (age) changed the form of this solidarity?
