Discover the beautiful silhouette animations of Lotte Reiniger and learn some of the skillful techniques that made her a star of early animation.

In this unique animation workshop, Maria Steinmetz will introduce you to the beautiful silhouette animations of Lotte Reiniger, a contemporary of Walt Disney who was highly celebrated for bringing hand-crafted, artfully cut paper characters to life on the big screen. Following a showing of Lotte’s work, Maria will guide you in using simple cutting techniques and stop motion to design and make your own silhouette creations. Discover how shadow and light can be manipulated with simple paper figures and shapes to make awesome effects on screen, and watch as your ideas are transformed into a unique and magical silhouette animation.

Maria Steinmetz
Originally from Russia but now living in Berlin, Maria Steinmetz started her study at the University of Film and Television HFF Konrad Wolf in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Her diploma film "Changeling" screened at many international film festivals, including Cannes. In 2014, she became a master scholar at HFF "Konrad Wolf" with her film "Macramé". Since 2015, Maria has been working as a freelance animator, as well as leading animation workshops for children and adults.
