Premiered at the International Cannes Film Festival in 2017, this film went on to win the Golden Globe in the category "Best International Film" in 2018. It tells the story of Katja (Diane Kruger), whose son and Kurdish husband are killed in a nail-bomb attack. When the perpetrators are released due to lack of evidence, Katja seeks other methods of finding justice. Based on the nail-bomb attack in Cologne in 2004 by the NSU terror cell, this film is another tour de force by the well-known German director Fatih Akin.

Casting
Director: Nicolas Wackerbarth, colour, 94 min., Germany 2017

This 2017 comedy drama provides a behind the scenes look at the lives of actors beyond the glitz and the glamour – at the auditions.  For her first television film – a Fassbinder remake – director Vera wants the perfect cast. But the first day of shooting is fast approaching and the numerous casting sessions have yet to find a suitable actress to play the leading role. Although the producer and crew are growing increasingly exasperated with Vera, audition reader Gerwin, who delivers the dialogue lines to the candidates, is happy with the extra work. When the male lead suddenly has to back out at the last minute, Gerwin thinks that this might just be his big chance.

Pre-Crime

Director: Monika Hielscher / Matthias Heeder, colour, 91 min., Germany 2017

New technological developments are everywhere. They play an especially important role in ´protective policing`, making it possible to expose crimes before they take place. For this purpose, police and private enterprises worldwide rely on the analysis of ´Big Data`. This documentary provides a glimpse both into the lives of people whose job it is to develop this technology, as well as those who have fallen victim to this form of data monitoring. In so doing, it raises the fundamental question of whether the global increase in security measures justify the full monitoring of private individuals?

Festivals: International Documentary Filmfestival Munich 2017, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival 2017, Filmfestival Hamburg 2017, Filmfestival Kitzbühel 2017

Director Matthias Heeder will attend the screening.

Following the screening a panel discussion about Protective Policing will take place.

At Eye Level / Auf Augenhöhe
Director: Evi Goldbrunner / Joachim Dollhopf, colour, 99 min., Germany 2016

11 year old Michael has been living in a children’s home since the death of his mother. He has never known his father, but becomes determined to locate "Tom" after discovering a lost letter his mother wrote. An online search leads Michael to his father's doorstep, where he waits for a while before leaving a note. A neighbour tells Michael that Tom is usually rowing at that time of day, so Michael makes his way to the water — where his excitement is replaced with shock when he sees that Tom is of small stature, shattering the vision of his father he had constructed. This award-winning children's film follows Michael and Tom as their lives go on to change in unexpected ways, challenging idealised concepts of role models and manliness.
