The paperback version of
“An Irish Sanctuary – German-speaking Refugees in Ireland 1933-1945” by Gisela Holfter and Horst Dickel (Berlin/Boston: de Gruyter 2018) will be launched at the Goethe-Institut with an introduction by H.E. Deike Potzel, the German Ambassador to Ireland, and Hugo Hamilton, Irish-German writer followed by a talk by Dr Gisela Holfter.
Dr Holfter lectures in Irish-German studies at the University of Limerick and her current research focus includes Exile Studies, specifically German-speaking exiles in Ireland 1933-1945. Her new book, co-authored with Horst Dickel, provides the first comprehensive and detailed account of German-speaking refugees in Ireland 1933-1945 - where they came from, the immigration policy towards them and how their lives turned out in Ireland and afterwards.
Thanks to unprecedented access to thousands of files of the Irish Department of Justice as well as extensive archival research in Ireland, Germany, England, Austria and the US as well as numerous interviews, Gisela Holfter and Horst Dickel for the first time produced an extensive overview of how many people came, how they contributed to Ireland, how this fits in with the history of migration to Ireland and what can be learned from it. The Research Project was supported by the Irish Research Council.
