After fleeing the war in Syria, teenage siblings Lohan and Samar and their family of 14 settle in Germany, where the two feel a new sense of freedom to express themselves as transgender. As they experiment with makeup and hairstyles, the girls emerge into their new world with radiant and soaring spirits—but under the surface, layers of conflict, prejudice, and despair simmer. Directors Laurentia Genske and Robin Humboldt follow the young women over three years, revealing Lohan and Samar's challenges between their family and their desire to live authentically. Although the family's bond is strong, the teens' parents feel the pressure of their own religious and cultural beliefs. While Zuhur and Talib remain caught between their faith and their fear of judgment by their watchful neighbors, their daughters negotiate their new identities as they grow up and find a place for themselves in society.
Laurentia Genske was born in Cologne. She studied documentary film directing at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television in Cuba. During her studies she made the documentary films AM KÖLNBERG, EL MANGUITO and AFUERA. Her graduation film AM KÖLNBERG and her debut film ZUHUR`S DAUGHTERS were released in cinemas. Her films have been invited to internationally renowned festivals and have been honored with numerous awards.
Byron Jose is a Los Angeles based writer, producer, and performance artist engaging in community-led, artistic, and liberatory projects rooted in immigrant and queer lived experiences.Byronis the Artistic Director and Producer of Tranza and Festival de Barriletes Los Ángeles, and founder of vuch Interpretation and Consultant Services. Current and past work has been presented at the Goethe-Institut LA’s Neighborhood Interpretive Center 2022, the National Queer Arts Festival, qteam’s Night of Bad, and as lectures, performances, and installations at universities around the US. These projects center trans and queer liberation through social practice and reclamation of traditionally queer spaces.
