Precious Ivie

The German Film Office and the Goethe-Instituts in the U.S. are pleased to present a screening of Sarah Blaßkiewitz’s acclaimed feature debut Precious Ivie (2021) as part of the Annual Conference of the German Studies Association in Arlington, VA. This screening is free and open to the wider public and will be followed by a Q&A with director Sarah Blaßkiewitz and actor Haley Louise Jones, moderated by Prof. Priscilla Layne (University of North Carolina). Afro-German Ivie (Haley Louise Jones), whom her friends call Schoko, works in her ex-boyfriend’s tanning salon in Leipzig while she looks for steady employment as a high-school teacher. One day, her half-sister Naomie (Lorna Ishema) shows up from Berlin to tell her about their father’s death and his upcoming funeral in Senegal. Neither one of them knew him, nor did they know each other until now and they both find it hard to imagine meeting his side of the family. As the sisters grow closer, her nickname is not the only thing that Ivie starts to question about her life. “[A] tender and powered exploration of mixed-racial identity that shows Germany’s difficulty in becoming a truly multikulti society.” (DMovies)
