The energy sector represents the main challenge in the location-based game from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Riwen, a young prince, returns to the country and has to fight the villain SonamOS – a company slowing down the country’s energy generation and distribution. A game that addresses the need to adapt in the context of globalization while respecting historical and cultural roots.

Solar Power in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is currently planning to build West Africa’s largest solar power plant to improve the country’s power supply. With more than 3000 annual hours of sunshine, the country is one of the hottest on the African continent – making solar energy a promising renewable resource. However, up to now, only 20 percent of the 18 Million inhabitants of Burkina Faso are connected to the electric grid. The Enter Africa team from Ouagadougou wants to address this challenge: They are convinced that change must go hand in hand with the country’s traditions and values. How can the roots be respected in the face of globalization?

Riwen against SonamOS

The main character in “Sankofa” is the young prince Riwen, who returns to Burkina Faso after ten years of studying and working abroad, where he has gained knowledge of different technologies. Back in Burkina Faso, he notices that the country is not using its energy potential to the fullest, because evil forces are trying to slow down the development process. Thanks to Riwen’s hacking skills, he can identify the villain, a company called SonamOS. However, even though he has the technological knowledge, Riwen understands the need to go back to his origins and relearn the values and traditions that he has lost throughout the years. The control towers we have to activate to fight SonamOS, are located at historical places in the city. Therefore, together with Riwen, we go on a journey through Ouagadougou and visit for example the Royal Palace.

The Characters

Riwen is not alone on this mission. The driver we meet at the beginning becomes the right hand of the superhero, a trustworthy partner who protects Riwen from dangers and leads him through the game. Besides, there is Kuka, an old man that represents wisdom and gives us hints from time to time. Another character is Agent X, a princess warrior of the Mossi ethnic group, who represents the female fighter and provides us with important information.

The game brings together the need for change and innovation with the respect for values and traditions and it brings us closer to the heart of Ouagadougou.
