Cultural and Creative Industries in Senegal

The Senegalese cultural and creative scene has been very active for many years. Concerts are held in the capital Dakar and in the regions, new fashion creations are created every year, and innovative projects are launched to further advance the sector.

What measures could open up sustainable perspectives for young creatives in the cultural sector and the creative industries? Where can local partners be found for corresponding collaborations?

These were the questions the Goethe-Institut Senegal addressed with the “Cultural and Creative Industries” project.

After analyzing the current market situation of the cultural and creative industries, the Goethe-Institut Senegal offered sustainable training for professionals from various cultural fields, especially music, fashion and journalism.

The project Cultural and Creative Industries was jointly implemented from late 2018 until early 2023 by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Goethe-Institut on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It improved employment and income opportunities for creative professionals in six partner countries: Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa. The project operated mainly in the music, fashion, design and animation sectors. In addition to promoting the development of entrepreneurial, digital, creative and technical skills through training programmes, the project aimed to strengthen the framework conditions and the ecosystem of the cultural and creative industries.
