Göttingen is a substantial city that has preserved its small-town charm. It is centrally located in Germany in the south of the state of Lower Saxony.

Of the 130,000 inhabitants, around 30,000 are students, including many from different countries all over the world. They contribute to the lively international atmosphere in the city's picturesque historic center.

Göttingen is defined by education, research and science. With four Max Planck institutes, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the university, a private college of applied sciences and the University for Applied Sciences and Arts, Göttingen has earned the title of "the knowledge city". "The Göttingen Nobel Prize miracle" was brought about by the 44 Nobel laureates who have worked here. Flanking the academic institutions, many renowned companies in the fields of measurement and laser technology, laboratory technology, medicine, life sciences and optics have set up shop here.

Göttingen is situated on Germany' major transportation arteries and can be reached quickly and conveniently from such important urban centers as Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt or Munich. The airports in Frankfurt and Hanover guarantee excellent international connections.

The cultural landscape features several theaters and clubs, a symphony orchestra, variety shows and a thriving independent arts scene. Also enhancing the city's appeal are numerous festivals and events, for example the Händel Festival, which was founded in 1920. Göttingen's musical culture covers every genre, from church music, jazz and rock to modern classical music. The Göttingen Literaturherbst, held each year in the fall, attracts world-famous authors to the city. And in Göttingen, people speak Hochdeutsch – making it an ideal place to learn the language!

The surrounding area, with its parks, lakes and woods, offer many inviting spots for hikes and daytrips. The Harz mountains are within easy reach by train. Sports play a big role in Göttingen – both for participants and spectators. The professional basketball team attracts a strong following. Bicycles are everywhere. The city center has clubs, cafés and pubs, and there is always plenty of activity on the university campus, including many weekend parties.

I used to find learning German really difficult and I tried lots of different things. But on the language course at the Goethe-Institut, I suddenly started making rapid progress. Lessons were simply highly effective and tailored to the students.
