Documentary on Power, Water, and Civic Resistance in Bosnia and Herzegovina

By Semper / Gerila

Rivers on the Edge - The Battle for Water in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a medium-length documentary produced by the Gerila portal that examines the impact of small hydropower plant construction on rivers and local communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through seven concrete case studies—Pliva, Duboka, the Neretva, the Kasindolska River, the Neretvica, the Ugar, and Kruščica—the film portrays the conflict between investors, institutions, and citizens defending natural resources.

The film is built around testimonies from activists, experts, and local residents, recorded directly on location, using 4K video production and drone footage that further document the condition of the rivers and surrounding areas. Through their stories, a broader pattern of natural resource governance emerges, in which economic interests often take precedence over environmental protection and public interest.

The aim of the project is to highlight systemic problems in the management of natural resources and to raise awareness of the importance of protecting rivers as one of the key sources of drinking water and biodiversity in the region.
