The book is a day to day account of the events leading up to the spectacular fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago, as experienced by an American who had made West Germany her home years before, but continued to be baffled by German history and culture. Notes and reflections on events at an international, local, and personal level are read in Irish and German – English translations will be available in print. For the writer the extraordinary developments of the year coincide with an unexpected and joyful turn of events in her own life.
About the author:
Born in 1947 in the USA, Sylvia Bledow has come to Ireland again and again. There she has not only learned the Irish language, but also traditional Irish singing. Her love of Irish culture and language has resulted in three books in Irish: "Fínéid as an tSín” (2014) and "Ceithre Bhean Déag as an Ghearmáin" (2017) and „Bliain na nIontas – 1989 sa Ghearmáin: dialann” (2019). She has also written poems and essays in Irish that have been published in literary magazines. The US-born American came to Germany for the first time as a student when she studied for two semesters at the University of Freiburg. After spending some time in Latin and Central America as well as in China, the globetrotter now lives with her husband in a small community in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
