An extraordinary and unique combination of Irish, English and German - The Goethe-Institut Irland invites you to spend an evening full of thematic and linguistic diversity with the author Sylvia Bledow in the newly restored Institute’s library on Merrion Square.
Ceithre Bhean Déag as an Ghearmáin
In 14 short stories, Sylvia Bledow describes more or less fictitious female characters - the protagonists are fictitious in principle, but the stories contain a true core. One is a love story about an Irish and a German musician who meet in southern Ireland. Another one deals with learning Irish and creating a Gaeltacht in the Swabian Alb. In contrast, there is a 94-year-old survivor of the Shoah, who the author saw on television and subsequently visited. Germany, its community, its history, its landscape and its language, as experienced by different women, serve as the background for these stories.
About the author:
Born in 1947 in the USA, Sylvia Bledow has gone to Ireland again and again. There she has not only gradually learned the Irish Gaelic language, but also traditional Irish singing. Her love of Irish culture and language has resulted in two books in Irish: "Fínéid as an tSín” (2014) and "Ceithre Bhean Déag as an Ghearmáin" (2017). She has also written poems and essays in Irish that have been published in literary magazines. The US-born American came to Germany for the first time as a student when she studied for two semesters at the University of Freiburg. After spending some time in Latin and Central America as well as in China, the globetrotter now lives with her husband in a small community in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
