Sir JJ College of Architecture in collaboration with Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai and the Architecture Foundation, India invite you to a lecture by David Fixler titled: "Modern Matters - The Global Renewal of Modern Heritage" on January 13, 2023 Friday 5:30 pm IST, at the Claude Batley Gallery, Sir JJ College of Architecture, Fort, Mumbai. 

The talk will focus on Modernism in the 20th century, a global phenomenon that manifested itself in different ways across different cultures – changing many of the ways in which we interact with each other and our environment. This will be followed by a panel discussion with David Fixler, Rahul Mehrotra and Kirtida Unwala and moderated by Mustansir Dalvi.

David Fixler is the Principal of DF Architecture Planning Preservation and Lecturer in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is an internationally recognized leader in the field of historic preservation with a focus on buildings of the mid 20th century. His projects include buildings designed by Modern Movement masters including Alvar Aalto, Louis Kahn and Eero Saarinen. David is a Design Excellence Peer Review Architect for the United States General Services Administration, has had his design and written work published internationally and has lectured extensively around the world.

Panelists:

David Fixler, FAIA, FAPT, Principal of DF Architecture Planning Preservation and Lecturer in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is an internationaly recognized leader in the field of historic preservation with a focus on buildings of the mid 20th century. David is a Design Excellence Peer Review Architect for the United States General Services Adminstration, has had his design and written work published internationally and has lectured extensively around the world.


Rahul Mehrotra is the Founder Principal at RMA Architects based in Mumbai and Boston; and Professor of Urban Design and Planning at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Mehrotra has been actively involved in civic and urban affairs in Mumbai, having served on commissions for historic preservation and environmental issues, with various NGOs and Civic groups. He was the Executive Director (1994-2004) of the Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI), where he is now a Trustee. Mehrotra is a member of the Steering Committee of the Laxmi Mittal South Asia Institute at Harvard. He is also a founding member of the Board of the Indian Institute of Human Settlements, Bengaluro. Mehrotra has taught at the University of Michigan (2003-2007) and at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at MIT (2007-2010).


Kirtida Unwalla graduated from the Bandra School of Art in 1979 and is a recipient of the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship for specilized training in architectural conservation from De Montford University, Leicester UK in 1996. She has acquired specialized training in "Structural & Materials Conservation" at the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi March-April 1996. In private practice since 1983, & has co-ordinated and undertaken consultancy projects concerning: Restauration of historic buildings including structural and architectural restoration, adaptive re-use of historical buildings, Urban area analysis and documentation studies of historic precincts & districts, Conservation management guidelines for heritage precincts and settlements. Few of her works include Restoration of Ismail Building at Flora Fountain, Afghan Church at Colaba and Juma Masjid at Crawford Market.
 

Mustansir Dalvi is Professor of Architecture at Sir J.J. College of Architecture. He has lectured, read and published several papers on architectural education, architectural history and heritage, urban transformation and architectural semiotics. His doctoral research, for which he received a PhD from the IIT-Bombay (IDC), examined Bombay's Art Deco architecture from a semiotic perspective. He is the author of The Romance of Red Stone: an Appreciation of Ornament on Islamic Architecture in India (Super Book House), and The Past As Present: pedagogical practices in architecture at the Bombay School of Art (Sir J.J. College of Architecture/UDRI). He also edits 20th Century Compulsions, a collection of writings about early Indian modernist architecture. Across his many avatars, he indulges in being an archivist, a curator and columnist, a commissioned writer, editor and a published poet.
