BangaloREsidency
The bangaloREsidency programme has been conceived as a long-term collaboration between the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore and various innovative and discerning contemporary art/cultural spaces and partners in Karnataka and Kerala (primarily in Bangalore), with a view to offering German aspirants a space conducive to creative output and the opportunity to interact with Indian artists/experts, in the challenging context of Asia's fastest-growing metropolis.
About bangaloREsidency
The bangaloREsidency takes place once in two years andruns for 8 weeks. It typically kicks off with an orientation tour to the primary cultural watering holes of the City - the ideal way to get to know us, each other and the hosts.
The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan will bear economy return airfare from Germany to Bangalore and accommodation during the bangaloREsidency, in collaboration with the local host organisation. International health insurance has to be obtained and borne by the artist. We offer a daily maintenance stipend of 15 €, which will adequately cover board and routine expenses, but not rent and related costs in Germany. We also offer a production budget of upto 1500 €. The budget should be in snyc with the proposed project and comply with the guidelines that will be communicated to the resident after arrival. If the selected candidate is receiving funding from other sources, they are obliged to inform us and the terms will be adapted accordingly.
At the beginning of the bangaloREsidency, the artists will be expected to make a public Pecha Kucha-style (i.e. short, tight, largely image-oriented with a strict time limit of 7 minutes) presentation in English, offering an insight into their practice and if desired also the proposed project in Bangalore. Although it is not mandatory to complete the project during the residency, it is expected to present a short "open studio" towards the end, giving an indication of activities during the residency. On completion of the residency, a brief report for our online Archive is required in English and German.
The host organisation will extend all possible technical support, but applicants should be aware that circumstances could be different in India and should be prepared to adapt and deal creatively with potential challenges in terms of resources and materials.
While pursuing their own artistic project is the primary goal, the artist will be expected to interact with the local art world as one of the objectives of the bangaloREsidency is to initiate a sustained dialogue and exchange of ideas and opinions, one that will reach beyond the period of the bangaloREsidency.
Extended travel outside of the residency city, should be planned before or after the period of the residency. Per diems will not be calculated for any time spent in other locations.

Applications are invited from artists living and working in Germany, fluent in both German and English, and looking for a stint in an expanding global metropolis like Bangalore to complete or complement a particular art project. The precise reasons underlying the desire to pursue an artistic project in a city like Bangalore should be specified. We are particularly interested in applications from artists who belong to (or work closely with) an institution in Germany that is open to and has the infrastructure for a reciprocal engagement with Indian artists, under thebangaloREsidency-Expandedprogramme.
The host organisation offers the freedom to create in an ambience conducive to innovation and expression, as also the freedom from everyday mundane routine.
1. Check whether you are able to arrive in Bangalore on the required date, as the start of the bangaloREsidency is, as a rule, fixed and cannot be negotiated.
2. India is developing dynamically in the cultural field as well. The bangaloREsident profile desired by the hosts often changes every year. It is therefore recommended that interested artists first check for the updates on the host pages before sending in their application.
Applications that reasonably match the profile of the desired host have a good chance of being considered.

Tips for applicants
We would like to help German artists, in particular those who have perhaps never been to India, to get integrated into daily life in this country, and gain an understanding of the culture. We try to ensure that our guest artists are able to work productively in the local environment and realise their artistic project together with the Indian artists / local host organisation.1.
