German language levels
at the Goethe-Institut

The Goethe-Institut locations in Germany offer a full range of general German language courses for every level of language learning which meet all individual requirements. The time it takes you to reach the next language level may vary depending on the course you enrol on and the intensity of your language learning.

All language courses offered by the Goethe-Institut are based on the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), known as A1 to C2, which are further sub-divided into levels. Course participants are individually assigned to the right level course by completing a free assessment test after booking a course.

The modular course system offered by the Goethe-Institut provides a high level of flexibility and transparency according to the level. On the one hand, it makes it easy to switch between different types of course. On the other hand, it creates transparency with regard to how the learning process is structured.
