German with Felix and Franzi
German for Children

Felix & Franzi © Goethe-Institut London

New and exciting material for primary school teachers has been created by the Goethe-Institut London in cooperation with German native speakers and British primary school teachers. The material enables all German teachers in the UK (regardless of their own level of qualification) to make a flying start with teaching German. The consecutive lesson plans are regularly revised and extended. Brand new Year 2 material was published in January 2015.

Two engaging hand puppets, a frog called Felix Frosch and a duck called Franzi Ente, take centre stage. They live in a special German letterbox. Having recently moved to the UK from Germany, the two characters experience many adventures which form the theme for each chapter.

Each chapter introduces new vocabulary and grammar lessons and is accompanied by a wide range of activities and extra material such as songs, videos and whiteboard applications. The lesson plans as well as all other features can be downloaded free of charge.

The materials

A central element of the course is to enable the children to develop cultural awareness of aspects of life in German speaking countries as well as creating a love for language learning. The Appendix provides further information and materials such as song texts, flashcards, cultural tips as well as a few explanations on grammar and sounds.

Please check out: Exercises have been created for the vocabulary of all Felix & Franzi chapters on www.memrise.com

Memrise is an online learning tool which introduces new words or revisits vocabulary learned during lessons. It helps young learners to remember vocab by using flashcards augmented with mnemonics. You can register for free. As an additional encouragement, pupils can even follow their high scores which can be motivating for some of them. These exercises are recommendable for working at home or unsupervised.
