The Craft of Film

The Craft of Film is an ambitious and illuminating series which will shine a light on the different crafts involved in filmmaking. Screenings of outstanding European feature films followed by ScreenTalks and two separate masterclasses by leading filmmakers will celebrate nine film ‘crafts’ –directing, cinematography, costume design, editing, acting, screenwriting, production design, animation and production.

The filmmakers participating in the ScreenTalks will be French screenwriter Thomas Bidegain (A Prophet), Austrian costume designer Tanja Hausner (Amour Fou), Danish production designer Jette Lehmann (Melancholia), Czech Animation director Tomáš Luňák (Alois Nebel), Romanian actor Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days), Greek Editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis (Dogtooth), Polish producer-director Malgorzata Szumowska (Body).

Portuguese director Pedro Costa and the German cinematographer Fred Kelemen will run masterclasses, alongside being present for ScreenTalks following the screenings of Horse Money and Béla Tarr’s film The Turin Horse respectively.

The Craft of Film is part of Film in Focus, a series of events with which the Barbican explores and celebrates the power of the moving images and its influences across the arts.
