European Short Film Festival In Short, Europe: Best of Best

Using live-action footage with material generated with the computer graphics engines of popular computer games, they have combined ideas from Neal Stephenson’s science fiction classic Show Crash (1992), depicting a future society shaped unfettered ‘anarcho-capitalism’ and digital technology, with their own research and interviews with freelancers on gig-economy platforms who share highly precarious work conditions. Ciné Lumière - Institut français

In Short, Europe is back with a collection of award-winning short films from 28 European countries.

As a member of EUNIC London and in collaboration with the EU Delegation to the UK and the Glasgow Film Festival, we are delighted to present the 6th edition of In Short, Europe. After successful screenings in Leeds last year, the festival moves to Scotland for the very first time and will be hosted by the Glasgow Film Theatre on 20th and 21st April. A few days later it will return to the Ciné Lumière in London from the 26th -28th April.

The Festival is a diverse and exciting celebration of European short filmmaking and is going from strength to strength with each edition. This year, Best of Best, is no exception with all films being award winning. The 28 films travel across Europe from Ukraine to Scotland taking in countries as varied as the Faroe Islands, Flanders and Belgium’s Wallonia.

In Short, Europe: Best of Best features five strands, including a special selection of children’s animation. Curated by Glasgow’s Balenji Mwiche, the titles of the programmes sound promising: Smile You’re on Camera, Hard Decisions, People on the Precipice, Psychodrama and Why’s the Sky Blue?

Germany’s contribution to the festival is the film Platform by Steffen Köhn and Johannes Büttner. Using live-action footage with material generated with the computer graphics engines of popular computer games, they have combined ideas from Neal Stephenson’s science fiction classic Show Crash (1992), depicting a future society shaped by unfettered ‘anarcho-capitalism’ and digital technology, with their own research and interviews. These were with freelancers on gig-economy platforms who share highly precarious work conditions. We meet Luis, a Deliveroo driver in Berlin, Ramesh, who delivers for Uber Eats in Hong Kong, and Hiro, who is working for Amazon Flex in Los Angeles. They live in different parts of the world, but they are all connected through the chat function of an online pizza delivery simulator. They communicate about their stressful lives and they are up to something....
