The Secret Cosmic Music of the East German Olympic Programme 1972-83

LeithLate returns from 23-26 June 2016 with a series of events including exhibitions, installations, on-street interventions, panel talks, tours, and the return of the one-night event on the evening of Thursday 23rd June.

Unknown Capability Recordings is an independent record label based in Edinburgh. Run by Drew McFadyen, it has been releasing the music of Martin Zeichnete since 2013.

Installed in the window of Leith Athletics will be an exhibition of equipment, ephemera and music telling the story of Martin Zeichnete.

East Germany, 1972 - Influenced by the motorik pulse of the 'kosmische musik' drifting across the wall Martin Zeichnete had the idea that the hypnotic, repetitive music could be used to train athletes. Taken by the authorities to East Berlin he spent 11 years creating music for the DDR's Olympic elite. The project known as Kosmischer Läufer (Cosmic Runner) remained unheard by the wider world until 2013.

LeithLate16 is supported by Creative Scotland, The Goethe-Institut, Edinburgh City of Literature and Settlement Projects.
