Study Day Der deutsche Film: an Introduction to German Cinema for A Level German students

This event is intended for teachers and students only.

This event is an ideal way to introduce students to prevalent themes in German cinema and this newly-revamped study day has been structured in response to the new A Level specifications, grouping some of the prescribed films according to key social and political themes which run through German cinema. Following its broadly historical development over many decades but focusing in more depth on more recent classic and popular German films, the event is conducted mainly in German. The morning session’s clip-based presentation will introduce themes covering the main social and political contexts of German cinema in recent times, before considering some of the prescribed film texts of the new specifications such as Lola Rennt, Goodbye Lenin!, Das Leben der Anderen and Sophie Scholl. In the afternoon there will be an introduced screening of one of these films, chosen by teachers. Students will have the opportunity to discuss the films in German. A resource pack based on the event will be available on the day.
