Festival of Cinema about Life and Work in East Germany
Running in conjunction with the exhibition The Inner Eye – Aspects of GDR Documentary Photography at Side Gallery in Newcastle, this season will present a rare selection of films from poetic shorts to dramatic feature films, produced in the GDR’s DEFA film studios, and more recent documentaries about photography. Together these films, of which a number will be provided by the Goethe-Institut, offer a fascinating insight into the world behind the Iron Curtain and how filmmakers and photographers have reflected it.

The Woman and
The Stranger as well as
Till Eulenspiegel by Rainer Simon,
Solo Sunny by Konrad Wolf, and the long documentary
Winter Ade by Helke Misselwitz as well as diverse range of shorts by amongst other Jürgen Böttcher, Misselwitz and Gundula Schulze. The season will also provide a unique opportunity to see the two films resulting from a 1987 exchange project in between the Newcastle-based Amber Collective and Winfried Junge, best known for the series The Children of Golzow, which he filmed with his wife Barbara over many decades. Winfried Junge made a film in North Shields, which was experiencing unemployment during the Thatcher government, and Amber, whose members went to the fishing and shipbuilding town of Rostock on the Baltic coast. From Marx and Engels to Marks and
Spencers and From Marks and Spencers to Marx and Engels will be screened along with a part of
The Children of Golzow.
Barbara and Winfried Junge, Rainer Simon and other filmmakers will be attending the screenings.
