It is often said that memory skips a generation. Inherited Memories, a book published by Zubaan Books born out of a joint project of the Goethe-Instituts in Kolkata and Dhaka, looks at how memories of Partition, or more accurately, partitions (1947 and then 1971) are handed down generationally. In this collection of interviews from both sides, the children and grandchildren of those who lived through Partition receive and hold moving, tragic and inspiring stories of loss, displacement and the making of new lives.
The launch programme will include a panel discussion with experts from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The panel will include Anam Zakaria, Hameeda Hossain, Meghna Guhathakurta and Nazes Afroz as the speakers. The discussion will be moderated by Kavita Panjabi. Urvashi Butalia from Zubaan Books will introduce the speakers.
