Celebrating Luther: the Lutherjahr 2017
The Luther Year in Germany has been a massive event. Luther is national news in Germany, while In Britain there has been so far less interest. What do such commemorations tell us about national cultures? How was Luther celebrated in the past, and what got left out? And what does the rise of Luther Kitsch today have to tell us?
Professor Lyndal Roper is the first woman - and the first Australian - to hold the Regius Chair in History at Oriel College Oxford. She read History with Philosophy at the University of Melbourne, then studied at the University of Tübingen before completing her doctorate at the University of London (King's College). She has published works on gender and the Reformation, witchcraft and visual culture and, recently, a biography of the German reformer Martin Luther. Professor Roper is a Fellow of, among others, the British Academy, the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Brandenburg Akademie der Wissenschaften. In 2016 she received the Gerda Henkel Preis.
Professor Charlotte Methuen is a church historian and an Anglican priest. She read mathematics at Cambridge, and then worked as a Community Advice Worker in the East End of London before going on to ordination training at Coates Hall, Edinburgh. She took her BD and then her PhD at New College, Edinburgh, with periods of study at the Universities of Heidelberg and Tübingen and taught at the University of Bochum and at the University of Oxford. Since 2011, she has worked and taught at the University of Glasgow in Church History (Theology and Religious Studies).
