Die deutsch-ungarischen Beziehungen währen nun seit über 1000 Jahren und  gehören zu den wohl glücklicheren Verbindungen zwischen zwei Völkern mit geringem historischem Streit- und Konfliktpotenzial. Wie in allen langjährigen Beziehungen gibt es aber natürlich Höhen und Tiefen. Um diese auszuloten haben wir das wohl bekannteste Promi-Ehepaar der ungarisch-deutschen Geschichte, Stephan der Heilige und Gisela von Bayern, in einer Comic-Serie verewigt. In kleinen Episoden ihres Zusammenlebens spießt der Zeichner Marabu Alltagsgeschehnisse auf und zeigt die Herausforderungen der deutsch-ungarischen Beziehungen.

István Goethe-Institut Budapest / Marabu István | Stephan der Heilige

(969 bei Esztergom – 15. August 1038)
Er war von 1000 bis 1038 erster König des von ihm gegründeten Königreiches Ungarn. Die Position Ungarns im damaligen christlichen Europa wurde durch die Heirat Stephans mit der bayerischen Herzogstochter Gisela befestigt und besiegelte die Bindung Ungarns an die Westkirche.
 

Gizella Goethe-Institut Budapest / Marabu Gizella | Gisela von Bayern

(985, Regensburg – 1065, Passau)
Sie war die älteste Tochter des bayerischen Herzogs Heinrich des Zänkers und heiratete um 995 Stephan, den späteren König von Ungarn. Nach Stephans Tod 1038 ging sie zurück nach Deutschland und wurde Nonne und später Äbtissin des Benediktinerinnen-Klosters Niedernburg in Passau, wo sie auch verstarb. Sie wurde 1975 selig gesprochen.
