Inherited Memories

This website focuses on events related to the Partition of Bengal of 1947. It intends to be an open resource for researchers and people who want to learn about this important part of history which forced over 8 million people to migrate because of a political decision. In this day and age we feel that an openly accessible archive is important so that each person can access and build their own opinion on these events.

Three generations have passed since the Partition of Bengal. The Goethe-Institutes in Kolkata and Dhaka present the five months project "Inherited Memories". It focuses on inherited memories of the third generation post partition, how it affects millions of people still today, shapes their minds and views of "the other Bengal" and what role the culture of memory plays in coming to terms with the passed on traumata.

First-Hand Narratives

Some Bengalis have changed their nationality three times or even more often since the Partition — without moving. Listen to this first audio-archive of first-hand narratives of inhabitants of the Chitmahals whose villages became a cue-ball of history.

Chronicles of Longing and Belonging

Longing and Belonging assembles narratives of 1947 partition by a section of Dhaka residents who experienced or were affected by that course of history. The project presents a collection of interviews and visual materials to trace the contours of those negotiations and attachments and to establish, in their fluid state, how a place makes subjects and subjects make a place.
