Football is the most popular sport in Germany. Six and a half million people (over eight percent of the population) are members of one of the more than 27,000 football clubs. There is a league system at the top of which is the Bundesliga founded in 1963, the 2nd Bundesliga introduced in 1974 and, since the 2008/09 season, the single-track 3rd division for men.
