An almost fundamentalist culture war

The last reading in this year's German Spotlight is A Little Calm Before the Storm written by Theresia Walser and translated into English by Erika and Tim CaseyAshish D’abreo directs the excerpted English reading of the play.

little calm before storm_gs23 © Ashish D'abreo About the play:
Three actors wait on an empty stage of a television studio, they’re about to be interviewed about the challenges of portraying the role of Hitler. The host hasn’t arrived yet, and the camera isn’t rolling. But the conversation is theatrical and worthy of a full-length act - lines are blurred about what’s banter and what should be included in the actual interview. The humour is constant, sometimes dark, always witty.

Ashish D’abreo has been working with the stage for over 25 years now, both as an actor and director. He has to his credit over 40 productions and hundreds of performances.

Director’s note:
As a theatre actor myself, this play triggered so many familiar moments of the many plays played out before the actual play - in green rooms, staircases leading to the wings and at the theatre canteens. The war of thoughts between traditional and modern employment of the stage and the treatment of texts, the immense insecurities of actors - veteran and otherwise. The focus of the play is on the portrayal of evil, but it communicates with the audience on so many layered and interesting levels.
