The second dramatised reading in the series 'German Spotlight 2019' is Kerstin Specht's The Time of the Tortoise (Zeit der Schildkröten), directed by Ashwini Kumar Chakre.

The Time of the Tortoise is a surreal conversation between two friends, Ali and Sami, who are dead, and are illegal immigrants in a European country. They take us through their journey of love, loss, living and fate, where we also meet other people from their life. The play talks about the yearning that makes us wander from place to place to find what we want, in a world that lacks love, compassion and empathy. A conversation between and among the dead and the living seeks to find some peace in us, no matter where and how we end up.

The play was chosen because of its interesting script and the director has planned the rehearsed reading with no edit.

Founder member of Mashaal (2007, Bangalore), Ashwini Kumar Chakre is an avid theatre practitioner engaged in acting, directing, scripting and theatre pedagogy. Working in different capacities with Indian Ensemble, Head Start School and Maraa, Chakre’s engagements range from public art performances and proscenium theatre to devising with children and directing a play for toddlers.
