An evening of music at the cafe

‘Returning Sound’ is a specially curated series of music programmes presented every month at the institute. The programme is curated focusing on experimental music written by independent electronic music producers.

The series is curated by Varun Desai.

2022 marks the return of public music events but few of them are meant to process what has happened to humanity over the last few years. ‘Returning Sound’ has been curated to restore a sense of community using electronic music to help reintegrate group listening, reflect on our collective experiences and navigate into an incalculable future.

The seventh programme of the series will feature HYBRID PROTOKOL and DnA MACHINES.

Hybrid Protokol HYBRID PROTOKOL HYBRID PROTOKOL

As a two-man legion from Kolkata, India, Soumajit and Aneesh joined forces in establishing Hybrid Protokol (HP) in 2015. Progressive electronica blended with breaks, acid and techno has become their main speciality over the years. HP is one of the very few "Premiere Live Electronica Acts'' to have emerged from the Indian Subcontinent.

Inspired by 80s & 90s electronic acts, including the likes of Junkie XL, Chemical Brothers & Underworld, as well as modern acts including Nina Kraviz, Scuba & Martin Stimming, their productions stigmatise aggressive bass lines, funky breaks, and melodic arpeggiations.

In addition to leveraging field recordings and ambient soundscapes within their primarily analog studio setting, the boys perform "Live" using an array of synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers. Aneesh’s feel for the manipulation of Soumajit’s distinct sounds has led to a unique mix of skills responsible for the punchy, dynamic sounds HP is known for today.

In 2016, HP was nominated as “Best Newcomer Electronica Artist in India” by the Radio City Freedom Awards. HP off late has been Scoring Music and Soundtracks for Feature films.

DnA Machines features the Indian drum & bass duo, Debjit Mahalanobis and Agnitray Chakrabarty. The duo is back at weaving their magic after a hiatus of six years with Debjit on the electric upright bass and Agnitray on beats and electronics.

Infusing Raagdari with electronic Indian rhythms and heavy basslines they push the boundaries of electro- acoustic music to create a fresh sound. With the revival of DnA Machines, the concept of composition or song play has turned into explorative live sets that take a new perspective on contemporary Indian Music.

In this live set, specially designed for "Returning sound" at the Goethe Institut Kolkata, the duo is coming up with a set, inspired by Dhrupad, Khusru and Ambient electronic music.
