Symposium
In co-operation with the
SHPT School of Library and Information Science at SNDT Women's University & the
Department of German Studies, University of Mumbai.
Books for young readers are an important segment of the German book market. German children‘s and youth literature is characterized by challenging subjects and careful illustrations. The book portal of the GI (www.goethe.de/kue/lit/prj/kju/deindex.htm) for children and adolescents provides compact information about German-speaking authors of books for children and adolescents, as well as children’s book illustrators for contemporary literature primarily for mediators of German literature abroad. The situation appears to be quite different in India: folk tales were part of the Indian oral tradition for millennia, but the concept of children’s literature as a separate genre was borrowed from the West. What characterizes the history of Indian literature in its several languages is the absence of any distinction between stories for adults and for children.
However, in recent years, there has been a sudden increase in texts targeted at children and adolescents. Children’s literature in India is gradually coming into a kind of power that the world of publishing is recognizing gradually.
It is important especially now to conduct a critical research in this area seriously. Academic discourse on this is therefore extremely important. The aim is to compare German and Indian children’s and youth literature, promote dialogue and observe the links between the two.
Studying children’s literature is an important part of literature, culture and media studies. This seminar deals with key aspects of this subject. This year, we are looking at the current trends and topics in Children's literature in various languages, practices to promote reading in Children and challenges involved in writing for children.
