VRWandlung

Kafka in Virtual Reality

One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug…

The VR project “VRwandlung” is a combination of classic literature and modern technology. As a project initiated by the Goethe-Institut Prague, “VRwandlung” turns Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”, one of the most influential novella of the 20th century, into a virtual reality experience.

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.” Now with VR technology you can wake up as a huge insect in a room faithfully reproduced after the original. “VRwandlung transfers Franz Kafka’s work from the pages of a book to virtual reality. The protagonist is no longer Gregor Samsa, but you”, explains Mika Johnson, the director who created the theme room with his young start-up team. During this 6 minutes experience, you as Gregor Samsa can explore the bed room, pull out some drawers and finds the key to unlock the door…once the door opens and the game ends.

The virtual reality installation was developed by Goethe-Institut Prag in cooperation with Mika Johnson and Shahid Gulamali and is presented in Pune by Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan.
