A book by Mala Mukerjee and Jael Silliman

The launch of the book will include a slide show of the city's diverse religious and spiritual heritage, and showcasing of photographs from the book as well as others to acquaint the audience with many of Kolkata's gems, some of which few know about. There will also be a presentation of a couple of short excerpts from the book.

The Book
Portuguese, Armenians, English, Scots, Jews, Parsis, Greeks and Chinese have come to Calcutta from the eighteenth century to reap their fortunes. They left behind a constellation of impressive religious edifices linked to the City's mercantile history. Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Jain communities from across the subcontinent also built places of worship.  This spiritual and material heritage is presented through photographs accompanied by a memorable story about each place. This multi-religious ethos of the City is particularly relevant today when diversity is increasingly being threatened by forces of homogeneity and globalization.

Mala Mukerjee, a graduate in Applied Art and Design Studies in Photography from the London Guildhall University, has had her works exhibited in all the major cities of India and abroad. She has numerous awards to her credit including the Owen Rowley Art Foundation (London), the Academy of Visual Media (Delhi) and an Honorary Fellowship from the Bangladesh Photographic Society.

Jael Silliman has several books to her credit and written extensively for journals, newspapers and magazines.
